I am vegetating

I just want to let my online garden friends know, that the reason I have not posted for so long is NOT that I turned into a pumpkin at Halloween. I am however kind of vegetating, since I am going through a bad depression. Like a rose bush I have lost all my leaves - no pretty flowers are to be seen anymore and I even think I smell more like maneure than rosy. But like a rose bush I will come back even stronger after a dark cold winter.

Niels, you are totally correct. You will come back, better than ever and wiser for it all. I miss you, the truth is, if you want a totally honest opinion, so you make sure and get yourself better. Or else!! ;-)

It's sad to hear that you're not feeling well. I hope - and I trust - that your spirits will rise as soon as spring arrives. In the meantime, take good care of yourself.

Dear Niels, just today I did a blog search for "rose gardens" and found your post. Take heart! It's a wonderful sign that you wrote in your blog today--an effort in healing. I too suffer terribly from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Take heart! This season of darkness will pass! Your blog is beautiful and I'll keep checking back on you. Like your beloved roses, you must seek the sunshine and turn to it. And remember, you are not alone.

Well, heck. I don't even know my url. And I wrote a post of such encouragement, too. I hope that doesn't prevent you from receiving my positive thoughts. Take heart, Niels. This cloud will pass.

I hope you get to feeling more like yourself again Niels. This is a hard time of year for those of us susceptible to depression. Been there done that. Take care, and we'll see you in the spring!

Dear Niels,
Thank you for posting this.
I missed you.
Your posts have been so well constructed; So informed on the history of roses and their companion plants. The romance and delight in roses you have shared is without equal to anything I have ever seen; so elegant.
You do not have to rally to that kind of post right now.
Frankly, we are interested in you. You have taken the right first step in sharing what is going on. As others have said, I have had challenges in the past, and sharing with people, sometimes people far away such as on Blotanical can help.
It is so great to hear from you again!
Sincerely,
Philip

I too was wondering where you had been. I'm sorry to hear that you aren't doing well, and sincerely hope that you will be feeling better soon.

Of course some depression requires therapy or medication, but I find giving away a bouquet or two to be a great boon to my mental health on dreary days. Of course it's preferable to use flowers I've grown, but this time of year the florist shop or grocery store are acceptable sources. Bouquets needn't be large or expensive to bring a smile to someone's face, and after giving one I find myself smiling the rest of the day, too. Perhaps some of the elderly neighbors you mentioned in a previous post would be good candidates for flowers from you! You could even take a picture to remember their smiles :-) Best Wishes.

I'm sorry to hear about your depression, I hope you'll get better soon - Spring is just around the corner.
If not, maybe you should travel to a sunny place/country instead.

Whenever I feel low, I would surf the net for inspirational quotes, or look through my rose album. My digital camera is able to
record video clips, thus, I could record videos of my garden and my roses when they are blooming. Watching those clips again would always put a smile
on my face.

By the way, I would like to thank you for this blog. I find it very inspirational and educational - I recently bought a Gertrude Jekyll because you recommended it,
and YES! The fragrance of Gertrude Jekyll is absolutely OUTSTANDING!! The rose bush looks cute, and I love those flat/saucer shaped blooms.

Don't give up! You will get better soon!

Hi Niels,

I hope you're feeling better soon. Winter weather puts me in the doldrums as well. I try to stay really, really busy (don't I always?) and that seems to work. It won't be long before you're out puttering in the garden again, wondering where winter went!

Awwww, big hugs! I'm still swimming upstream looking for your salmon fishing post. I could not past this post without saying that you have a grand blog and make lots of people very happy. I hope this feeling doesn't return as you seem very grand these days.
